The dog and the lamb (Diesonnenkind and MB)

    Time: 1700
    Place: Dining hall
    Characters: Mishka Foreniur, Izek Anrüs

Having just signed up for an interview that wouldn't start for almost an hour, Mishka strode the halls looking for some food to fill his belly and maybe some company to share said food with. He hadn't met or found any of his cabin mates just yet but he hoped they were friendly. It'd be pretty unfortunate if they weren't at least close to as sociable as him, if that became the case he might just have to get a cabin transfer... Eh, I don't want to seem rude by that... Oh what am I saying, this is all hypothetical anyway, I'm sure I'll be bunked with very nice people!

Finally having made it to the dining hall, Mishka grabbed a plate and piled on some of the free grub. Once his plate was sufficiently overflowing, Mishka looked around the room for someone to sit with, though it seemed most everyone had a full table.

Ear drawn back, he found an empty seat and started on his meal. I suppose I can eat alone this time, someone's bound to wanna hang out soon anyway. At this thought, Mishka's ear perked back up and his tail wagged gently back and forth, falling into the walk space behind him just a tad too much.

Izek was feeling especially cheery today. He had a free day, without any obligations or work-related issues. He was so cheery, in fact, that he didn't even feel like stressing about the taste of the standard food Lux was offering free of charge to all the passengers.

Sure, it wasn't especially delicious... but it was nutritious. There was always the minor issue of available room for enjoying said food but all things considered a bargain, really.

This day wasn't an exception to the rule, as Izek noticed when he finally reached the end of the queue with a full plate and necessary equipment for consuming it.

He walked about for a few minutes before spotting the nearly empty table. There wasn't a lot of space elsewhere... and the company did seem like something he'd like from a distance.

Izek took his time to walk next to the table and couhged a bit.

"Excuse me, is this spot taken?", he asked in a polite, almost friendly tone.

Mishka's ears pricked up at the sound of a voice, as he swallowed the bite he'd just taken, he looked to see just who the voice had come from. A young goat met his gaze and he smiled, "Course not, have a seat if you'd like~"

Taking in another mouthful and thankfully having the decency to swallow before speaking again, the Malamute introduced himself, "I'm Mishka, who are you?" Mishka's tall flopped about, wagging a mile a minute at the sight of what could very well be a new friend.

A sigh came out of Izek's mouth as he sat down on the opposite chair. He was relieved - it would've been completely possible that all the seats would've been taken. It happened occasionally - one person of a larger group occupied the table and kept it on hold for the others still on the line.

"Thank you. I haven't eaten in here for a while and couldn't remember there was so little room... but I suppose there isn't anything we can do about it, right?"

Izek positioned himself more comfortably on the chair he now occupied and looked back at the man opposite of him who apparently was busy to get somewhere. This Izek deduced from his eating pace. Or perhaps he just was a fast eater. Either way, the food was disappearing fast.

"I'm Izek Anrüs. Cabin 1, from Margas, Bartender."

Izek eyed the man a short while before beginning his meal.

He is older than me, seems nice. And not bad-looking either... but I'm silly for thinking about such things. In any case, he seems happy to have company.

"How's your stay been so far... and did you get a nice cabin?"

Izek was being quite sneaky with this one. The question was worded with care, allowing Izek to deduce what kind of a person this man was, if he had any close friends or family on board and possibly more.

His plate already more than halfway gone, Mishka looked up again with he same dopey smile on his face. "Very nice to meet ya Izek~" he gulped down the last of his plate and licked around his muzzle for crumbs.

"I suppose it's a nice cabin, haven't figured out who my bunk mates are yet but I hope they're friendly, and of course don't mind the occasional snoring." The dog let out a laugh at this, he'd been known to wake up those around him in the wee hours of the morning due to his snoring but he hoped it wouldn't be too much of an issue on this trip.

"Oh! You said you're a bartender? Sounds like a fun job, I'd probably get too mixed up with all the different mixes and stuff though. I'm part of the security on the ship so if you're ever in danger just give me a hollar and I'll save ya~" Placing his fork and knife on the plate, Mishka pushed it slightly out of his way but didn't move to return it to the collection area, he still had time to kill and he liked talking with Izek.

"What are you doing later? I don't really go to bed that early and I was thinking of going to the gym or just hanging out till I got too tired... Oh and sorry if I talk a lot, I get really excited easily and get carried away."

Seems like he doesn't have family on board - or at least not in the same cabin. They generally put families together, but there must be exeptions. In any case, he seems like a good sort of person. A bit spacey, but a good person.

Izek took a few more forkfuls of the vegetarian food option in front of him. He wasn't even really a vegetarian - the line just was shorter on that side. Not that it mattered much, though. The food tasted pretty much the same as the non-vegetarian thing he ate last week.

"I'm sure they'll come around - a lot of people are still searching their place on the ship and we haven't even picked up everyone yet. It'll be a lot more crowded in here, as well... I suppose they want to encourage us to use our own money for eating and such. " Izek shrugged a bit "I can't say I blame them."

Mishka certainly was enthusiastic and seemed to have a very positive look on life. Refreshing, really.

"Well, most of the mixes are pretty simple... and the ones that aren't... well, we're allowed to keep a checklist. It helps a lot. No one can remember all of them, I suppose. I bet the security job you have is more complicated - and more important."

Izek gave Mishka a smile. Indeed, this seemed like the kind of person Izek could like. And no, Izek wasn't doing anything later since it was his day off.

"Hmm... nothing, I suppose. I'm having a day off. It's mandatory on the job.... I'm not allowed to have too many night shifts on a row. Got to keep alert in case of barfights and so on. And the gym sounds pretty good - I haven't checked it out yet but have heard it's quite extensive and relatively empty. Do you want my comm number, or do we just settle a time?"

"Well I hope they come around soon, being alone really sucks. Too bad you can't be one of my bunk mates, I like you." Another dopey smile. Mishka pondered what Izek said about his job being more complicated, he hadn't really received any information yet so he wasn't entirely sure about what his specific duties on the ship were but they couldn't be that hard. "I'm pretty sure my job is just walking around the decks to make sure everyone's getting along, and to be quite honest, everyone here is pretty chill so I don't think my job's gonna be that difficult at all~"

Mishka was glad when Izek smiled, he was a nice person, and nice people should smile more often. To Mishka, it smiles could make people feel better and that was something he wanted; he wanted people to feel good and safe, not like some of the kids on Wera were. The thought of them tugged his smile down a bit but he corrected himself and brought his mind back to the conversation.

"I think exchanging comm numbers is a good idea, but I figure around 10pm would be good for me. How 'bout you?"

Izek took a few more bites, chew and replied thoughfully: "I wouldn't know, haven't had the priviledge of solitude in a long time. I got on to Lux with my sister and... suprise, suprise, the cabin filled magically. Not sure how she does it, but she seems to have a knack of getting things to go her way."

The thought of Izek being likable brought a smile to his face again. He did like smiling, but had once been too careless and trusting with it... and it showed a bit. Izek started to eat a bit faster as he notised Mishka had already finished. He didn't like to keep people waiting on him.

"Well, anyone can seem likeable. And I certainly try to be. Just hope you get to work on daytimes. Most people aren't so mellow when they're sad, tired... and possibly drunk or on meds. But I'm sure they go through this stuff in training."

Izek lifted his wrist up and started to navigate the menu with his other hand for sending a number. The food in front of him was almost finished.

"Sure, I can make a transfer. Where's your VeX?"

"Well that sure is lucky of you~ I bet you and your sister a really good friends. I never had any siblings myself and my parents worked a lot so I taught myself how to make friends with just about anyone. It works most of the time." Mishka reminisced for a moment on his puppy years, his parents were wealthy enough so "friends" flocked to him all the time. It took him a long time to figure out what actual friends are, and those kids he used to hang out with really weren't.

The thought of working a day shift where nothing much happened made Mishka's face contort into an uncomfortable frown. "Well I wanna be at the source of the action, not that I want people to start anything, but part of the reason I'm even here is to be a better protector, it wouldn't help me much if I never actually protected someone..."

"VeX..." Mishka pondered a moment before it dawned on him, "Aww geez! I never put it on this morning! I must have forgotten with all the excitement. Mine's one of the ones that's kinda like a watch, maybe I should get one of those implant things so I never lose it." Suddenly losing himself in his own thoughts, Mishka shook his muzzle back and forth to stay focused, "Uh, I guess we'll have to do the transfer at the gym later." Laughing sheepishly, Mishka reached back to scratch the back of his head.

"I suppose so", Izek answered dryly and seemed to tense up, "It's always...good to have friends."

He didn't want to bring up his parents or family too much, at least not now. It could lead to a variety of awkward questions with even more awkward answers. Izek would have to act fast, though, if he wanted to divert the attention back to something else. He closed his eyes for a while, reopened them and tried his very best to smile... and that he did, but it didn't look too genuine. Mostly just sad.

Izek drew his hands back to deal with his plate.

"I'm sure you'll be very useful in here. There's a lot of people on Lux that no doubt need protecting... I have a feeling some people will start to freak out in the contained space. And sure, we can go ahead and do it back at the gym."

Izek organized his plate, fork and knife. There was still a bit food left, but he wasn't going yo eat it. He tried to seem cheerful, but it would take a few hours to get back to the mood he had earlier.

Mishka felt the energy of the conversation shift and became a bit uncomfortable, "Well, we can stay friends if you like~" His tail twitched at the tensed air, desperately wanting to break the tension, Mish thought long and hard about what to do until a lovely thought crossed his mind. Jumping up, Mishka slid to the other side of the table and wrapped a paw around Izek.

"How about when we're at the gym, we can talk about whatever you like. You can ask me anything and I'll be totally honest with ya." A toothy grin spread across the dog's face at the thought, it could be fun, right? "I'd bring the offer to the present but I gotta get my butt across the ship to my interview here soon."

There had been a definite drop in conversation cheeriness, no doubt. And Izek was feeling quite guilty about it. After all, Mishka didn't seem to - and probably didn't have any malicious intent at all. Izek was mentally facepalming for over reacting like he just did.

Izek lifted his eyes up from the table and shot a vague smile to Mishka's direction. It wasn't one of his best attempts but it was the best he had at the moment. Surely the effort was better than none at all, yes?

"Oh, yes. I'm - I'm sorry. I'm just... well, I just haven't had a friend in a while. It's been just my sister and me and it can get kind of tough. Margas isn't the most forgiving of places."

He was sorry, honestly and undoubtedly sorry.

Suddenly Izek felt Mishka's paw on his shoulder. How did it get there and what happened? Izek didn't know. But he didn't mind, either. This made Izek burst out to a highly spontaneous laughter. Miska's honesty and sincerity was outright flattering.

"Well... okay? That works for me, as well. I'd hate to keep you from being on time. And again - I'm sorry."

Izek felt a lot better already - the situation had passed and the cheeriness started to seep back, albeit slowly. He even managed to alter his smile to an almost cheerful state or at least one that could be interpreted as one.

Even Izek started getting ready to leave.

No friends? That's pretty crazy, all the more reason to hang out then~ Mishka thought to himself, smiling at the final thought, "We're gonna be good buds Izek, I can tell." He leaned forward and scooped up all of the dishes, "You don't have to apologize, everyone gets down sometimes, I'd be more worried if you didn't show different emotions."

Shifting the dishes to one arm, the Malamute placed his paw back on the sheep's shoulder, "It was awesome to meet you Izek, I'll catch up with you later and get that comm thing worked out."

"Yeah, probably we will. I have a feeling we could prove to be quite useful to each other."

Izek nodded to the notion of not needing to apologize, but kept the appropriate facial expression. He didn't agree, but didn't dare to press the matter, either. It... was probably best to agree with this person. He had no need to express this minor disagreement, either, so it all worked out.

    Again with the touching.

This time Izek saw it coming and patted the paw on his shoulder assuringly with his own. It was a lot easier to react when he actually knew what was going on.

"You too", he smiled, "now go on and catch your meeting. You wouldn't want to be late now, would you?"

Mishka smiled at Izek, something about him made Mishka want to help and cheer him up so he decided to do just that as there friendship goes on. The smile grew a bit when the sheep patted his hand and he laughed at the comment.

"Me? Be late? Impossible~ I'm quite punctual I'll have you know." A small wiggle of the tail and Mishka was off to dump the dishes, "I'll catch you later buddy!"
